For Second Year Running, International Exchange Visitors Will Be New York City Marathon’s Largest Volunteer Contingent

On November 6, more than 1,000 participants on the Exchange Visitor Program – students, interns, au pairs, and research scholars who are in the United States on J-1 visas – will volunteer at the 2016 TCS New York City Marathon, the world’s largest marathon.

The exchange visitors will comprise more than 10 percent of the total volunteers at the marathon. They will stand alongside U.S. volunteers at Mile 6 in Sunset Park and Mile 18 in Harlem to provide water and moral support to nearly 50,000 runners from more than 135 countries, experiencing firsthand the American values of volunteerism and civic engagement. Several exchange visitors will also be running the marathon.

The State Department’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, the New York Road Runners, and 50 U.S.-designated sponsor organizations that administer the Exchange Visitor Program are coordinating this volunteer effort.
