Trump accepts resignation of US ambassador to UN

US President Donald Trump on Tuesday accepted the resignation of Nikki Haley as the country's ambassador to the United Nations.

Trump announced that Haley will leave her post at the end of the year, in a move that stunned allied diplomats and other senior officials. The timing came as a surprise to her colleagues at the State Department and at the UN Security Council.

US State Secretary Mike Pompeo and National Security Adviser John Bolton are reported to have been taken unawares. But Trump said Haley had told him about her plans some months ago, informing she wanted to "take a break" after two years in the high-profile post.
